Tiny Home: The Tiny Solar House
The Tiny Solar House was built in the summer of 2012 and was made possible by an awesome collaboration of business donations and volunteer labor. The original purpose of the house was to provide a working display of the four types of solar technology in a house for the Eco Experience building at the MN State Fair. We are now working on finding other uses for the house throughout the rest of the year. The house is transportable and fully livable. It has solar electricity, solar heat, solar hot water (if a water source is provided), a bed, a toilet and a working refrigerator.
Our major partner for donation of materials as well as construction of the house was The Chuba Company. You can see more of them on the DIY Networks show Bath Crashers. They began with securing a donation of Structural Insulated Panels (SIPs) for our volunteers to build the frame with. The main builder of the Tiny Solar House was CJ Craftsman Construction.
Over $21,000 in products were donated to our Tiny Solar House Project and it couldn't have happened without our business sponsors and volunteers who worked so hard to build it - Chris Burrington, Tim Pendergast, Jay Sitter, Todd Fink, Hassan Keshmiri, Larissa Maranell, Matt Maranell and Joel Cina. Plus Seth, Jay, David and Duane from Chuba Company who volunteered their time too!
While tiny homes can be up to 200 square feet in livable space, park homes are as large as 400 square feet. The only four-season builder in the park home market, Utopian Villas (UV) homes are created with 24-inch-thick insulated floors, which keep homes cool in the heat of July and toasty in the frigid temps of January. Styles of homes range from rustic to modern.
Utopian Villas has a new way to view park home models this year. Visitors will have full access to models with the latest in virtual reality goggles. Wind your way underneath the vaulted ceilings and cedar beams, into the spa showers, and on either end of the two-sided fireplaces—without leaving the showroom floor. Just strap on those virtual reality headsets and enter the (tiny) virtual world.
